Nicolas Cage Stole My Lines … Except One
My wife and I love the movie The Family Man. We love the humorous way it shows the simple joys of sharing a life with the person you love while raising a family — which turns out to be worth more than anything else (Spoiler Alert). In the movie Jack Campbell (Nicolas Cage) has two iconic lines which I’ve always felt he has borrowed directly from my life (royalty fee borrowed mind you).
- First, after realizing that the greatest part of his life has always been his wife Kate Reynolds (Tea Leoni) he says the ever classic line: “I choose us!”
- Second, once he finally realizes that it’s his wife and kids that make him great, successful and happiest he delivers one of the most honest summations of my married life with Laurie: “We’ve dealt with our share of surprises and made a lot of sacrifices but we’ve stayed together. You see, you’re a better person than I am. And it makes me a better person to be around you.”
Today is my and Laurie’s 23rd wedding anniversary and there are few things I’m more proud of than that! Like most people, I’ve not always made the best decisions or clearly thought through every choice but I’m relieved each day to know that on the most important one — who to marry — I knocked it clean out of the park!
On such an important day — as I sit alone in a Marriott hotel room in Spearfish, SD — I start to realize the price paid to accomplish great things. Things missed like dozens of soccer games, the first day of Jr. High, a fractured leg (ouch Courtney!), the start of a first job, final preparations for a 2-year mission and all the daily talks and encouragements. I realize that an accomplishment as big as trading and biking across America is only feasible because of better and stronger people making daily sacrifices on my behalf. This is not unique to me or unique to this adventure. Each of us can look back on every major accomplishment and point out the scores of people, because of whom, that accomplishment was made possible — for you.
I’m sad to be apart from my family and sweetheart YES, but I’m ever so grateful for my 23 year marriage to someone — as Nicolas Cage correctly stated — is a better person than I am. The only part of my life story Nicolas totally missed is that Laurie is doing all this for me just because I simply said that it was important to me.
Thank You Laurie! I love you and Happy Anniversary!!
