First Day of Riding
The views have been spectacular. It’s amazing what you see when you are going 14 MPH instead of 55 or 70. We all thought the ride from the Cape to Clatskanie was going to be relativity flat and easy for our first day. The first ten miles proved to be just that. It was great riding down the 101 towards the Astoria Bridge, small towns, great views and good company. Nine riders started the ride from this point and it was fun to see a drafting line of ” Apairy Fund” riding jerseys going down the road.
I will have to admit I was a little apprehensive about crossing the Astoria-Megler Bridge. It’s almost 4 miles long, what a great engineering design. At one point the bridge climbs to allow the big ships coming up the Columbia room to pass under. Riding a bike at such a high level above the water gives you a weird sensation. The vehicles were very respectful of us as we traveled across the bridge.
Going down highway 30 from Astoria to Clatskanie was anything but flat. Now, I’m not saying it was like going over the alpine loop, but it was still up and down and I’m a little sensitive to the hills. But the views were awesome. We arrived in Clatskanie around 8:30pm, ran to the restaurant which was closing at 9pm (it’s a small town and things close early)
It was a great day of riding. I love my new Fezzari Road Bike. One other thing, I didn’t tip over on the bike today.
